ANNAPOLIS, MD — Governor Wes Moore today released the following statement regarding the U.S. Senate’s passage of the federal budget reconciliation bill:
“This week, in an effort to ram through President Trump’s agenda, Senate Republicans signed off on one of the worst bills for working families our country has ever seen.
“This legislation would deliver one of the most significant upward transfers of wealth in American history, and slash services that working people rely on in every corner of Maryland. The benefits in this bill for the ultra-wealthy are financed on the backs of people doing their very best just to get by. This bill is a direct assault on the people of my state by our own federal government.
“Maryland Medicaid is our largest, most effective anti-poverty program, delivering life-saving health care coverage to more than 1.5 million Marylanders. SNAP supports approximately one in nine Marylanders – helping families put food on the table at a moment of heightened economic stress. President Trump’s plan would slash both of these programs, jeopardizing health care access for 196,000 Marylanders and threatening food assistance for more than 684,000 Marylanders. This bill would make energy bills more expensive, raise health care costs and directly hurt Maryland families, from the western mountains to the Eastern Shore and everywhere in between.
“Our administration will continue to actively oppose this legislation in partnership with our federal delegation, because no state in the country could overcome the consequences if it were to become law. No matter the final outcome of this continued chaos in Washington, we will continue to confront crisis with courage.”
