ANNAPOLIS, MD — Governor Wes Moore today announced the appointment of Yaakov “Jake” Weissmann as Acting Secretary of the Maryland Department of Budget and Management. Weissmann will assume the post as secretary on October 22.

“Jake Weissmann is an experienced public servant and one of the most effective policy minds in our state. His deep understanding of the Maryland budget, developed over years in both the legislative branch and in local government, makes him uniquely qualified to lead DBM,” said Gov. Moore. “His appointment is critical as we continue to execute on our budget priorities to make Maryland more affordable, competitive, and ensure responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars. We are honored to welcome him to the cabinet.”

Weissmann most recently served as the vice president of government relations and community affairs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he directed efforts to strengthen relationships with policymakers and secure operating and capital funding. Prior to that, he spent more than a decade in the Maryland State Senate, including serving as chief of staff to multiple Senate presidents. In this role, he supervised all policy and personnel, with an expansive portfolio that included the state budget, tax policy, and major health care and education initiatives.

“I am humbled and excited to serve under Governor Moore and to honor his administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, even during deeply challenging times,” said Jake Weissmann. “Working in collaboration with our partners in the Maryland General Assembly, we will ensure the steady management and administration of a balanced budget that delivers for all Marylanders.”

Weissmann also served as an assistant chief administrative officer for Montgomery County, where he coordinated economic development, serving as the direct point of contact for several county departments, including environmental protection, housing and community affairs, permitting services, and transportation.

Weissmann earned his law degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law. He also earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Maryland, Baltimore and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and social work from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
