Citizenship Maryland is a state program that makes it easier for people to become U.S. citizens. We give money to local groups so they can help you:

  • See if you are ready to apply

Why Should You Become a U.S. Citizen?

Becoming a citizen is a big goal. It gives people living in Maryland many important rights and perks:

  • Safety: Protect yourself and your family from deportation
  • Voting: Have a say in Maryland and the U.S.
  • Better jobs: Get jobs that pay more. This includes jobs with the government.
  • Family: Help your family members get their green cards
  • Travel: Get a U.S. passport to travel and be protected by the U.S. abroad
  • Money for school: Get scholarships and help paying for college

About 150,000 people in Maryland - PDF are able to start the process to become citizens. Most of these people live in Montgomery and Prince George’s County.

How to Become a Citizen (Naturalization)

You need to pass several steps to become a citizen:

  • Fill out your application: This is called Form N-400.
  • Pass a test: You will get questions about U.S. history and the government.
  • Pass an interview
  • Take the Oath: You will promise loyalty to the U.S.
