ANNAPOLIS, MD — Governor Wes Moore released the following statement regarding the death of Former Chancellor of the University of Maryland, College Park, Dr. John Brooks Slaughter:

“Dr. Slaughter was a trailblazer. He made history as the first Black leader of the University of Maryland, College Park, and through his fierce advocacy for equity and inclusion he left the school better than he found it. Dr. Slaughter expanded minority faculty hiring and retention, developed academic programs in STEM fields, and guided the university with grace. You can find his fingerprints on every corner of the university he helped grow.

The State of Maryland is a better place because of Dr. Slaughter. His legacy of excellence lives on in the students he inspired and the educators he mentored. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones, friends, and former colleagues.”
