ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Wes Moore today joined B&O Railroad Museum and CSX officials to announce a $5 million grant from CSX to support the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad Museum’s South Car Works Master Plan. The contribution will help fund the museum’s development plan leading up to the 200th anniversary celebration of American railroading in 2027.
“Today, we celebrate another great partnership between CSX and the State of Maryland,” said Gov. Moore. “This transformation will better connect the museum with the neighboring communities, expand workforce training opportunities on campus, make better use of open space, and remodel the South Car Works building as the new entryway to the museum.”
Governor Moore was joined by B&O Railroad Museum Executive Director Kris Hoellen and CSX CEO Joe Hinrichs. The B&O Railroad Museum’s planning and workforce development effort will bring the museum closer to the neighborhood, inspiring Marylanders to envision the future of Baltimore City and the state as a whole.
CSX is a leading supplier of rail-based freight transportation in North America.
The B&O Railroad was the
first steam-operated railway in the United States to be chartered as a common carrier of freight and passengers. The museum was started in 1953 in response to significant public interest and given the importance of the railroads to American history and America’s future. In 1987, CSX officially transferred all land and property for the museum to a non-profit that became the B&O Railroad Museum. The State of Maryland supports the continued success of the B&O Railroad Museum, with the latest support coming through Governor Moore’s $1 million grant included in the FY2024 Capital Budget to aid the museum’s master plan effort.
The partnership between the State of Maryland, City of Baltimore, and the railroad continues today on important projects like the $466 million Howard Street Tunnel expansion project. The Moore-Miller Administration was proud to partner with President Biden and Amtrak in January to announce a key agreement to construct the Frederick Douglass Tunnel, a modern high-speed rail tunnel that will replace the B&P Tunnel.
The year 2027 will mark the
200th Anniversary of American Railroading and the founding of the B&O Railroad. To visit the B&O Railroad Museum, go to:
