ANNAPOLIS, MD — Governor Wes Moore today announced the appointment of Bob Yeager as director of the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation. Yeager will succeed director Dan Phillips, who is retiring after more than 35 years of dedicated public service. Yeager will assume his new role today.

“Bob Yeager has dedicated his career to serving the people of Maryland. We are grateful that he has continued to raise his hand, as he takes on this new role as Director of the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation,” said Gov. Moore. “I also want to thank Dan Phillips for his distinguished service to our state. Together, we will work to honor his example of leadership, partnership, and an enduring commitment to the people of Maryland.”

The Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation, also known as the State Department of Assessments and Taxation, is a customer-focused agency that works to ensure that property is accurately assessed, business records are appropriately maintained, and necessary tax-related information is conveyed to state agencies and local jurisdictions. The department oversees business services, real property valuation, and property tax credits.

Bob Yeager has built a network of strategic partnerships to foster housing security and preserve homeownership throughout his tenure at the department. Prior to assuming the role of deputy director of the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation, Yeager served as assistant commissioner for policy at the Maryland Office of Financial Regulation, where he advised the commissioner of financial regulation and the secretary of labor in creating policy to protect consumers and promote a competitive environment for Maryland’s financial services industries.

Yeager began his tenure at the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation in 2018 within the Business Charter Legal Division. In 2019, he was appointed as Maryland’s state tax sale ombudsman, where he supported homeowners struggling with property tax payments. As Maryland’s state tax sale ombudsman, Yeager helped launch and direct the Maryland Homeowner Protection Program, which provides loans and support to at-risk homeowners. Yeager also served as the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation’s legislative officer, championing over a dozen tax sale reforms through the Maryland General Assembly.

A licensed Maryland attorney, Yeager has served on the Maryland attorney general’s Access to Justice Task Force committees, the Maryland Government Finance Officers Association's tax affinity group, and is a member of the Maryland Council on Economic Education. Yeager holds a B.A. from Occidental College in Los Angeles and a J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law.
