ANNAPOLIS, MD — Governor Wes Moore last evening delivered an address to Marylanders in the wake of President Trump and Congressional Republicans’ failure to reach an agreement to keep the federal government open. In his remarks, Governor Moore uplifted the support and resources announced yesterday to help meet the needs of Maryland’s federal workers who are impacted by the shutdown.
Here’s what Maryland leaders and stakeholders are saying about the governor’s address:
“Baltimoreans, Marylanders, and Americans across the country are being used as a political pawn by Republicans, and here in our communities, we see the real pain that their actions are causing,” said Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott. “At the local level, we’re focused on solving the problems that matter to Baltimoreans—lowering costs, making our communities safer, and protecting health care access—and we're grateful to have strong partners at the state level to support this work. We'll be here to support all of our residents through this shutdown, including furloughed federal workers, until Republicans get their act together.”
“The federal shutdown threatens to bring serious consequences for Baltimore County families, its workers and its communities — disrupting vital services and operations that people and businesses rely on every day,” said Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier. “Baltimore County is strong and poised to meet any challenge, but our families and businesses should not have to shoulder this burden. I appreciate the state’s leadership, making clear the actions Maryland is taking to protect residents. We will be working closely with our partners to ensure that families and communities in Baltimore County have the support they need.”
“President Trump and the Republicans continue to wreak havoc on our economy, our federal workers and our future,” said Baltimore County Councilman Julian E. Jones Jr. “I stand with my fellow Democrats who are demanding a reversal of cuts to our health care system. I stand with the thousands of federal workers in Baltimore County and throughout Maryland who continue to bear the brunt of the Project 2025 agenda. Team Maryland is sending a message to Washington that it's time to end Trump’s unpopular policies.”
“While we can’t know what the future holds in Congress, we must continue to hold ourselves accountable to the people we serve, and those who will be most impacted by this federal government shutdown,” said Prince George's County Executive Aisha Braveboy. “To take care of the people of Prince George’s County, Governor Moore's administration and my administration will continue to work in partnership to support impacted federal employees. And together, we will move quickly to make sure county agencies have what they need to preserve the vital services our people rely on.”
“This shutdown strikes at the heart of Greenbelt—our federal employees, contractors, and families who serve our nation every day,” said Greenbelt Mayor Emmett V. Jordan. “We are committed to providing critical services and support through our direct city services and our local partners, but we also urge residents to reach out for assistance if they find themselves in need. Greenbelt stands united in the face of uncertainty, ready to help our neighbors weather the storm with compassion and resilience.”
“Federal employees and their families have been left to figure out how they'll get by without a paycheck during this federal shutdown, all because Trump and his Republican controlled Congress are standing by their decision to raise the costs of healthcare for average Americans,” said Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman. “I want to thank Governor Moore for stepping up to provide resources that will support Marylanders during this chaotic time.”
“It is unfortunate that we are in the midst of another federal shutdown, which threatens the livelihood of all Americans, including thousands of federal workers and their families in Howard County,” said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. “Through every adversity, we have continued to show up for our residents and businesses, and we will continue to do so during this shutdown as well. I am grateful for the leadership of the Moore-Miller Administration for continuing to lead with love during this challenging time.”
“In Frederick County, we believe in compassion, community, and stepping up for one another in times of need,” Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater. “The shutdown is disrupting essential services and creating financial uncertainty for families and businesses across Maryland. We are committed to working in partnership with state leaders and supporting our residents who need help in this difficult time.”
“At a time when dysfunction in Washington is putting families at risk, I’m incredibly grateful to serve in a state where competence and compassion are the cornerstones of leadership,” said Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor. “Governor Moore’s swift action reminds us that government can be a force for good—especially when people need it most. Here in Frederick, we will exhaust every available resource to ensure our neighbors—especially those most vulnerable—can weather this moment with dignity. From food assistance to rental assistance, we are committed to doing what Congress won’t: showing up for people in crisis. The reality is, this government shutdown is the direct result of congressional negligence and incompetence. If you ever doubted that some in Washington have stopped caring about working families, look no further than their failure to keep the lights on. Local and state leaders are once again left to pick up the pieces.”
“It is extremely gratifying and refreshing to be able to partner with Governor Moore, who has actively engaged with the local leaders across the state from the very beginning of his administration,” said Frederick County Councilmember M.C. Keegan-Ayer. “When so many Marylanders are being adversely impacted by the federal shutdown, it’s crucial that these partnerships are strong. Having the Moore administration working with counties across Maryland, sharing accurate, up-to-date information about resources and services available, we will be able to help our Maryland neighbors get through the many challenges they will face in the days ahead. Team Maryland is strong.”
“I appreciate Governor Moore’s leadership and his clear commitment to standing with Maryland’s federal workforce,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. “Our federal workers, contractors and vendors are our neighbors, our friends, and the people who keep our nation running. The Governor and Team Maryland are making it clear that the State will not look the other way—we will continue working together to protect our residents and ensure that our economy weathers this storm.”
“The federal shutdown has a very real impact on Rockville families, workers, and small businesses,” said Rockville Mayor Monique Ashton. “We know that uncertainty about paychecks, services, and resources creates real stress in our community. That’s why Rockville, in coordination with federal, state, county, and municipal partners, is taking proactive steps to connect residents with support — from food and housing assistance to small business resources. Even in challenging times, we remain committed to ensuring that our residents are not left behind.”
“Families, neighbors, services, and businesses throughout Gaithersburg and across Montgomery County will feel real impacts from the federal government shutdown,” said Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman. “In this moment, local and state government is showing up together to support our dedicated federal workforce. I appreciate Governor Moore for his swift response and his administration's efforts to protect our state in this moment.”
“As we know, Indian Head and Charles County have a large number of federal employees and contractors, and its economy is largely focused on federal facilities,” said Indian Head Mayor Brandon Paulin. “This federal government shutdown drastically affects people's day to day lives, including the small businesses in my town that rely heavily on the federal workforce to keep their doors open. We are committed to working with the state to provide supports to those affected during this uncertain time. I strongly urge our nation's leaders to get the federal government back open and working again.”
“As a member of the Harford County Council, I take seriously my responsibility to safeguard our community in times of uncertainty,” said Harford County Councilmember Nolanda Robert. “A federal government shutdown impacts not only our dedicated federal employees, but also the small businesses and families who rely on them. Our neighbors should never have to wonder how they will cover their bills or put food on the table because of gridlock in Washington. As a councilmember, I stand firmly with our federal workforce and will work to ensure Harford County provides every possible resource and support during this challenging time.”
“Charles County is home to many federal employees in the Washington, DC region, and a government shutdown places tremendous stress on our community and local economy,” said Charles County Board of Commissioners President Reuben B. Collins, II, Esq. “We stand ready to partner with Governor Moore and the State of Maryland to ensure federal government employees have the support they need during this challenging time.”
“The University System of Maryland’s Board of Regents is keenly aware of how this government shutdown will impact the agencies that call our state home—which provide the vital academic and research opportunities that make our colleges and universities the best in the nation,” said University System of Maryland Board of Regents Chair Linda R. Gooden. “During this challenging time, we are incredibly grateful for Governor Wes Moore’s leadership in advocating on behalf of our young professionals and career public servants.”
“The Maryland Economic Development Commission recognizes the critical role federal workers play in driving our state’s economy and ensuring the vitality of our communities,” said Maryland Economic Development Commission Chair Dana Stebbins. “We are grateful for Governor Wes Moore's unwavering leadership and his proactive measures to support these essential public servants during the federal government shutdown, reaffirming Maryland's commitment to its workforce and economic stability.”
“We appreciate the Moore-Miller Administration for stepping up to support Marylanders impacted by the federal government shutdown and for including credit unions in the conversation about available resources,” said MD|DC Credit Union Association President and Chief Executive Officer John Bratsakis. “Credit unions are here to help, offering relief programs designed to ease the financial strain and provide members with flexible solutions during this challenging time.”
