ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Wes Moore this week joined U.S. Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and Domestic Policy Council Director Neera Tanden at the White House to announce the Biden-Harris Administration’s Improving Student Achievement Agenda for 2024. The agenda, which is the White House’s roadmap to accelerate academic performance for every school and student in the country, will use proven strategy and tools—including accountability, grants, and technical assistance—to drive three evidence-based strategies that are core to the Administration’s agenda: increasing student attendance; high-dosage tutoring; and summer learning and expanded learning time.

The strategies complement the Administration’s continued focus on improving mental health in schools, supporting America’s teachers, and strengthening core instruction through the Raise the Bar: Lead the World initiative.

“Our students have champions in President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. This Administration has worked to improve mental health in our schools and has gone to the mat for our educators and school staff—and we are here to work in partnership to drive the next chapter in this work,” said Gov. Moore. “We’ve made big strides here in Maryland, but we will not slow down. We owe it to our students to build an education system that nurtures their dreams and our state is ready to work with the Biden-Harris Administration to realize that pledge.”

Governor Moore joined a roundtable discussion with New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, the Domestic Policy Council, and educators from around the country to discuss partnerships to build commitment to and encouragement for strong action to accelerate academic progress. Governor Moore delivered remarks in support of the agenda, expressing Maryland’s deep commitment to providing a world-class education for its students and providing the tools they need to succeed. 

Moving in partnership with the Biden-Harris Administration, Maryland has made strides to reach the goals laid out for states around the country. In October, the Maryland State Department of Education unveiled a $28 million investment in the Maryland Tutoring Corps Grant Program to help more than 80,000 middle and high school students raise their math scores. Funding for the initiative was made possible by President Biden’s American Rescue Plan.
