ANNAPOLIS, MD—Lt. Governor Boyd K. Rutherford on Saturday was recognized as the 2019 Visionary of LIGHT Honoree at the annual LIGHT Health & Wellness Awards Gala in Baltimore. Founded in 1988, LIGHT Health & Wellness Comprehensive Services, Inc. is a nonprofit organization with the mission of supporting children, women, and families affected by HIV/AIDS, substance use disorders, mental health disorders, poverty, and more. Each year, the organization recognizes community leaders and public servants who have worked to provide resources and improve access to care for those affected by these conditions and their families. The lieutenant governor was presented the award by Debbie J. Rock, Executive Director and CEO of LIGHT Health & Wellness.

“I would like to thank Debbie Rock and the entire LIGHT Health & Wellness organization for this tremendous honor,” said Lt. Governor Rutherford. “It is wonderful to be recognized for this important work, but it is organizations like this and the people who are on the front lines every day who I believe have the greatest impact, yet who do not always receive the recognition deserved. Thank you for the work you do, which is truly making a difference in Baltimore and across our state.”

Lt. Governor Rutherford has been a strong partner with Governor Hogan in leading the administration’s efforts to combat the opioid epidemic, break the cycle of poverty between family generations, and improve the state’s mental health delivery system. He has chaired the state’s Two-Generation Commission, the Maryland Heroin and Opioid Emergency Task Force, and currently leads the Inter-Agency Heroin and Opioid Coordinating Council. The lieutenant governor also currently chairs the Commission to Study Mental and Behavioral Health in Maryland.
