Eleven of the Fastest Growing Private Firms in the U.S. are Minority Business Enterprises
Maryland’s MBE Program Celebrating 40 Year Anniversary
ANNAPOLIS, MD – Maryland is home to more than 100 of the fastest growing private companies in the country according to the latest Inc. 5000 rankings. Eleven of those firms are small businesses certified as a Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) in Maryland.
“There are over 6 million businesses in the U.S., and making the top 5,000 is quite an accomplishment,” said Jimmy Rhee, Special Secretary of the Governor’s Office of Small, Minority & Women Business Affairs.
Maryland’s MBE Program is an economic development tool for small businesses certified as socially- and economically-disadvantaged. This includes firms owned by African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and women. Minority participation goals are set on a contract-by-contract basis, and only the work of certified MBEs can be counted toward the MBE goal. Housed within the state’s socioeconomic policies, the MBE Program is implemented through state-funded contracts.
Founded in 1978, Maryland’s MBE Program is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
“Today’s MBE Program has a $1.9 billion economic impact on our statewide economy and is directly responsible for creating jobs within the small business community,” said Secretary Rhee. “Seeing MBEs receive this kind of recognition on a national scale is proof that Maryland is a great place to own a small business.”
“Congratulations to all 111 Maryland businesses named on the Inc. 5000 2018 list of the fastest-growing private companies in America, and especially our 11 MBE firms,” said Secretary Rhee.
