ANNAPOLIS, MD — First Lady Dawn Moore this Saturday was honored with the ‘Champion of Reproductive Health’ Award from Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC, the oldest and largest provider of family planning services in the Metropolitan Washington region including Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. The honor reinforces the First Lady’s commitment to working within the Moore-Miller Administration to protect reproductive rights in Maryland.

“I’ve been a champion for women and children across more than two decades of public service — that’s why the work of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington is deeply personal to me–because it reminds us of the power of our voice and our choice as women,” said First Lady Moore. “In Maryland, we will fight to ensure we’re creating a safe, equitable, and prosperous home for all, and that includes protecting reproductive rights for this generation and those after us.”

The First Lady received the honor at the Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC’s 2024 Impact Gala, which uplifts and honors those who are champions for reproductive health. Among 400 attendees and Grammy Award-winning artist Common, honorees from Maryland included Prince George’s County Council Chair Jolene Ivey.

Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC has served the greater Washington area for over 80 years, providing high-quality and affordable reproductive health care, promoting education programs that empower all individuals to make informed reproductive choices, and protecting the right to make those choices.

The Moore-Miller Administration is committed to making Maryland a safe haven for reproductive care. In 2023, the administration signed into law a comprehensive reproductive rights package, which took the first steps towards enshrining reproductive rights in the Maryland constitution, protected private medical information, and expanded access to reproductive healthcare services.

This year, through the FY2025 budget, the administration allocated $5 million to increase Medicaid provider reimbursement for abortion care and reproductive services, and the Maryland Department of Health awarded a $10.6 million grant to the University of Maryland, Baltimore, to administer Maryland’s Abortion Care Clinical Training Program. The administration also announced a four-year partnership with Upstream USA to provide Marylanders with more equitable access to contraceptive care.
