Will Enhance State’s Workforce as Science, Engineering, and Biotech Fields Continue to Grow

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Larry Hogan today announced that his Fiscal Year 2019 budget provides $2 million in new funding for Biomedical Sciences and Engineering Programs at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Md. This funding is part of an ongoing effort by the Hogan administration to grow the state’s skilled workforce in science, engineering, and cybersecurity.

“We recognize that as our businesses and economy grow, especially in the science, engineering, and biotech fields, we need to make sure that we are also growing a strong, qualified workforce here in Maryland,” said Governor Hogan. “The Universities at Shady Grove have built a reputation of developing well-rounded leaders who will make important contributions in business, science, engineering, education, health care, the liberal arts, and more.”

The governor will deliver remarks at the Universities at Shady Grove annual graduation celebration later this evening.

The $2 million is part of a $33 million multi-year collaborative effort between the state and the University System of Maryland designed to produce more graduates in key workforce areas, helping to spur Maryland’s already growing economy.

“Ensuring students at all of our higher education institutions are prepared for 21st century jobs at the cutting edge of our economy is at the core of our mission,” said Dr. James Fielder, Secretary of the Maryland Higher Education Commission. “This funding will expand opportunities for more Marylanders to pursue careers in these innovative fields.”

Located in Montgomery County, the Universities at Shady Grove is a partnership among nine Maryland public universities offering more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in one centralized location.
