Governor Larry Hogan Announces Judicial Appointments

Fills Three Vacancies on the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County, One Vacancy on the Circuit Court for Allegany County 

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Larry Hogan today announced the appointments of Judge Erik Nyce, Judge Karen Mason, and Ms. Dorothy Engel to the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County, and Mr. Jeffrey Getty to the Circuit Court for Allegany County. The governor made the appointments after reviewing nominees from current and previous judicial nominating commissions.

“After conducting a thorough vetting process, I am confident that Judge Nyce, Judge Mason, Ms. Engel, and Mr. Getty are the most qualified candidates to fill these vacancies,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “Their extensive legal experience has prepared them to be strong advocates for the law and the citizens of their respective counties, and I offer my sincere congratulations.”

Erik H. Nyce is currently serving on the District Court for Prince George’s County, and will fill a vacancy on the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County. Prior to the bench, Erik Nyce was a partner with Doran, Siciliano, Gallagher & DeBlasis, LLP, and Lombardi, Powers & Amster. His previous experience also includes serving as counsel to the Prince George’s County Board of Elections, and a panel attorney for the District Court Division of the Prince George’s County Public Defender’s Office. Judge Nyce graduated from Wake Forest University School of Law.

Karen H. Mason is currently serving on the District Court for Prince George’s County, and will fill a vacancy on the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County. Prior to the bench, Karen Mason served as a Magistrate for the District Court for Prince George’s County, an Assistant State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County, and a clerk for a Prince George’s County Circuit Court judge. Judge Mason graduated from Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law.

Dorothy M. Engel is currently serving as an Assistant State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County, and will fill a vacancy on the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County. Her previous experience includes serving as an Assistant State’s Attorney for Baltimore City, a clerk for an Anne Arundel County Circuit Court judge, and a Judge Advocate in the U.S. Army Reserve. Ms. Engel graduated from Catholic University School of Law.

Jeffrey S. Getty will fill a vacancy on the Circuit Court for Allegany County. Jeffrey Getty has practiced law since 1987 and is currently a partner at Geppert, McMullen, Paye & Getty. His previous experience includes working for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, as well as the law firms of Semmes, Bowen and Semmes, and Goodell, DeVries, Leech and Gray. Mr. Getty graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law.

These appointments will take effect immediately.
